Our spiral staircase County Antrim project was supplied to an ambitious new build project in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

The Brief

In pursuit of a lifelong dream, our client was building a new build home for him and his family. The client wanted to achieve a modern aesthetic, but with a blend of the traditional. For this reason, traditional hardwood timbers were important to him. Whilst creating a wow factor in the room, the client also required a staircase that was compact in size, yet practical and safe for his family to use on a daily basis.

The Solution

A traditional spiral staircase was not going to be enough to create the type of feature that the client wanted and a radical design like our all glass spiral staircase was not going to meet the brief of blending the traditional. So, we decided to combine the two. We specified satin lacquered oak hardwood treads with curved glass panels, finished with a curved oak handrail. The oak treads met the requirement of the traditional and complemented other exposed hardwood in the property, whilst the curved glass panels reflected the modernity of the building. As a further benefit, the balustrade allowed the light to pour through the staircase, which helped to keep the large open space feeling light and airy.

Aside from its appearance, the staircase provided the family with a safe and reliable access to and from the first floor, without being too visually or aesthetically imposing.

After spotting a similar case study on our website, our client filled out the form at the bottom of the page, and we quickly sent over a quotation.

To be certain of his choice, he flew from Belfast to Southampton to visit our Romsey showroom, just 15 minutes from the airport, and placed his order soon after.

The chosen design was a model 71 spiral with oak treads, a curved glass balustrade, and mini glass riser infills to close the gap between the treads. This not only allowed light to flow through but also created a striking feature in the spacious, vaulted room.

Project Recap

  • Create a staircase the blended the modern and traditional without compromising on usability.
  • Design the staircase so that it was safe and reliable for a range of different people to use on a daily basis.
  • Ensure that the staircase was not too physically or visually dominant in the room.
  • Deliver the brief within a reasonable budget.

Summary

The final spiral stair met the clients brief better than he had anticipated and the staircase suited the space perfectly and provided the practical access solution required for the property.

Project of the Month - April 2026 – Open Oak Stair Project of the Month - April 2026 – Open Oak Staircase in Kingsbridge new build. In the picturesque market town of Kingsbridge, our client was building a new home. Having enjoyed many holidays in the South Hams area of Devon, he was eager to retire there and quickly purchased a plot of land when the opportunity arose. We first received the property plans by email, along with a brief to design an open, light staircase for the main hallway. While he wasn’t fond of anything overly modern, he wanted a statement feature for the new double-height space. As the house was to be oak-framed, using oak for the staircase was a natural choice, complementing the flooring. The selected design was the WF staircase, known for its open risers and floating look. This distinctive style features no stringer on one side, instead using a specially crafted handrail to support the treads. The staircase was supplied in a half-turn configuration with cut white stringers on the outer side. Stainless steel spindles led up to a curved handrail on the inner side, adding an elegant elliptical twist to the flight. The client also requested a second staircase leading to a mezzanine deck elsewhere in the home, built in the same style and materials for a cohesive finish.

Walnut Spiral Stair in Chiswick RefurbishmentOur client lived in a duplex apartment in Chiswick, with a basement below that was a separate dwelling rented out to someone else. When the basement came up for sale, he bought it with plans to connect it to his home and create a three-story property, likely returning it to its original layout. He originally contacted us about the stairwell size needed for a spiral staircase, as space was tight and a spiral seemed the best option. While the opening width was ideal, the depth was limited, so we designed an 1800mm diameter spiral with a shortened triangular platform, shifting the center column away from the rear wall. The platform also served as a walkway between two rooms, and using a glass floor helped bring much-needed natural light into the windowless basement. For the finish, he chose special boxed walnut treads over steel with brushed steel balustrades for a modern yet understated look. The result was a stylish connection to the basement that brightened and enhanced the living space.

February 2026 - Oak Spiral Stair in Canterbury new February 2026 - Oak Spiral Stair in Canterbury new buildThis month’s project of the month is a Model 71 spiral staircase supplied to a new build property in Canterbury, Kent. The customer had already built one property on the site and was embarking on the second build project. He had a nice open hallway planned but wanted to create a unique feature as you entered the property. It was very important that the staircase was modern in design but also reflected the more traditional style of the building. After reviewing the options available, he settled on our Model 71 with satin lacquered oak treads, brushed stainless steel components, and curved glass balustrade infill panels clamped between posts. The stainless steel and glass gave a modern feel to the staircase, whilst the oak treads and handrail reflected the traditional style of the property. As this was the main staircase in the property, and the client had plenty of space, he opted for a larger than required diameter. Not only did this create a dramatic focal point when entering the hallway, it also made the stair very safe and practical for everyday use.For a seamless installation, we supplied matching landing balustrade to go across the front of the galleried landing.
