Our client was building a new property right on the beach in Bognor. The spiral staircase was designed to access a walkway upstairs that led to bedrooms on either side.
Positioned as the centerpiece in the hallway and the first thing seen upon entering, it needed to make a strong impression. It also had to be as open as possible to preserve the view of the large front windows overlooking the beach and sea—a truly wonderful setting.
Although it was the main staircase in the house, it only served two rooms upstairs. The building inspector approved a category B spiral staircase (secondary domestic spiral stair) for the walkway above, so it was built with a 1500mm diameter, providing the required 600mm clear tread width.
