Our client built a new property in Maldon, Essex, backing onto the River Chelmer estuary with stunning views over a nature reserve. They wanted not only a quick and easy route to the garden but also a raised balcony area to relax and enjoy the scenery. A spiral staircase was the obvious choice, with its minimal footprint preserving space in the garden below. The 6m balcony ran along the building and was supported at the outer corners by a post and the central column of the spiral stair.
To keep the design light and open, the balcony featured steel newels and a handrail with toughened glass infill panels for maximum transparency. On either side, sections of 1800mm frosted glass panels provided privacy screens.
