External Spiral Staircase Aberdeen

Our client was refurbishing a house on the outskirts of Aberdeen, overlooking rolling fields.

Part of the internal structural work involved creating an opening at first-floor level to allow access to a new balcony and a space-saving way to descend to the garden below.

The balcony would provide elevated outdoor space and let them enjoy the relaxing scenery. A spiral staircase was the obvious choice for the stairs, as it only takes up as much space as its diameter.

The spiral supported one corner of the platform, with a vertical post supporting the other, and glass infill panels between steel newels ensured the views remained unobstructed.

Brief:

• Provide a space-efficient way to access the rear garden from the first floor
• Create a raised balcony area with enough room to sit out
• Use steelwork with a weather-resistant finish
• Ensure the stairs have wide enough steps for frequent use

• A bespoke steel spiral staircase
• A rectangular platform supported by the center column and an additional post
• Fully galvanised finish for weather protection
• A 1800mm diameter spiral staircase with an 800mm clear tread width
