We were commissioned to create a double-flight bespoke spiral staircase for a client carrying out a major refurbishment of their property just outside Oxford.
The building had a 1900 x 1900mm void running through it, and since this was the only staircase in the property, we needed an 800mm clear tread width, resulting in an overall diameter of 1800mm to meet compliance.
With spiral staircases—especially multi-flight designs—it’s essential to plan the entry and exit points carefully, as walls or tread depth regulations can sometimes limit options. Fortunately, this layout worked perfectly.
The client requested a simple, functional design but wanted a petal-shaped tread detail. We used maple treads set on a steel plate with straightforward vertical steel spindles, and added landing balustrades at each level along with large square platforms on the first and second floors.
