This project featured a double-flight spiral staircase for Knight Frank’s estate agent in Islington, North London.
They wanted a space-efficient way to access the upper two floors while creating a striking first impression upon entry. Spiral staircases have long been seen as elegant sculptures that bring a sense of gravitas to a building.
For this design, the client chose walnut treads to match their flooring and doors. Since it was a semi-commercial setting, each step was fitted with two stainless steel strips at the front for slip resistance.
The staircase was built as a category C flight, providing an 800mm clear tread width between the outer and central column handrails. The balustrade featured a stainless steel handrail with several horizontal steel bars running parallel to it.
To add a sweeping touch, the client opted for an external stringer, highlighting the staircase’s graceful curves. The steelwork was finished with a white factory powder coating.
