Our client owned a holiday home in Southwold and was renovating it with a view to retire there in a few years. Part of the work involved opening up the room and fitting in a snug and a bedroom under the eaves. A stair with a small footprint was needed. As the downstairs area was open plan it was also essential that the design and feel of the staircase blend in well and was attractive.
The Brief
Find a staircase with-
A small footprint because space was at a premium
Keep things transparent to maximise the light flooding through from the roof windows above
Ascetically pleasing as it would be on show from the open plan downstairs
Create a non slip effect to the steps
Providing a landing balustrade around the opening upstairs
The Solution
We supplied our custom made model 76 spiral staircase
Laminated glass treads for maximum transparency
Stainless steel handrail and spindles to maintain the light appearance
Open risers, to allow light to pass freely through the stairwell
square clear glass platform at the top as a feature
For a visual marker and slip resistance we added a couple of frosted strips to the front of each step
