Spiral Staircase Wimborne

Our spiral staircase Wimborne project was supplied to a quaint cottage in the Dorset countryside.

Brief

The client was wanting to carry out a conversion of the roof space of their garage into living accommodation for their son. They needed to source an access solution that was no only in keeping with the property, but also acceptable to the conservation officer as the property was listed. To add to the complexity of the project, they wanted to introduce a balcony area and to have hidden support for it. Normally, balconies are supported by vertical legs to the ground; however, in this setting, we needed to come up with a much more imaginative solution. The client also had a wisteria growing up the walls that was many years old, and that they wanted to preserve. This meant that we also had to find a way of spacing the balcony off the wall without compromising support for it.

The Solution

Whatever we provided needed to have strong structure, and to provide a degree of design flexibility. For this reason, we proposed our Custom Made Spiral Staircase. It has a continual steel tube centre column which gives a particular amount of strength. We also identified that the client had a brick support near to the location of where the end of the balcony would sit. This was ideal because it meant that we could sufficiently support the balcony without having any obvious vertical supports to the ground. This solution was also acceptable to the conservation officer. To protect the wisteria, we used steel tube spacers which allowed us to create the space we needed without compromising on the integrity of the structure.
