Spiral Staircase Blandford Forum

Two spiral staircases were supplied for a holiday let refurbishment in Blandford Forum, Dorset.

The property, a former chapel, needed access to each of the loft bedrooms in the eaves.

The client, a designer by profession, chose a galvanised spiral staircase from the range, featuring basic steel treads to be finished with vinyl later. The result was striking—modern, industrial steel staircases set within an older building.

Each staircase had a 1500mm diameter to provide the regulation 600mm clear tread width, and both spanned an impressive 4.6m from floor to floor.

Based on our standard external fire escape design, they featured vertical steel spindles and a steel handrail, with the addition of a 1.5mm plate stringer on the outside to hide the treads and add a touch of design detail. The photos were taken before the floors and vinyl tread coverings were completed.

Brief

• To access two bedrooms high in the eaves of a chapel with minimal footprint
• To create a unique industrial style contrast with the chapel features
• To ensure the stairs met all building regulations

• Galvanised finish to the steelwork
• 600mm clear tread width for compliance and riser bars to reduce the riser gap
