Project Overview
This project involved the supply of three bespoke Model 500 staircases for a private development of two newly built, detached modern homes in the village of Broughton, Test Valley, Hampshire. Designed to complement clean architectural lines and open-plan interiors, the staircases were a key visual feature within each property.
All three staircases were manufactured in oak, glass and steel and configured as half-turn Model 500 stairs, delivering a strong balance of structural presence and light, open aesthetics.
The Brief
The client required staircases that would:
- Suit modern, architect-designed new-build homes
- Maintain a light, open feel throughout the interior
- Act as a design feature rather than a purely functional element
- Use natural materials to add warmth to contemporary spaces
- Be consistent in style across both properties while remaining fully bespoke
The Model 500 was selected for its flexibility, clean detailing and ability to combine oak treads with structural steel and glass balustrades.
Staircase Design & Configuration
Each staircase was supplied as a custom half-turn Model 500, tailored to suit the individual floor layouts while maintaining a consistent visual language across the development.
Key design features include:
- Solid oak treads providing warmth and contrast
- Open riser construction to maximise light flow
- Steel stringers delivering strength with minimal visual bulk
- Structural glass balustrades for a clean, modern finish
- A floating appearance that enhances the sense of space
The combination of open risers and glass ensures the staircases feel light and unobtrusive, even as central architectural elements within the homes.
Materials & Finish
Natural oak was chosen to soften the modern interiors and add texture, while the steel and glass elements reinforce the contemporary aesthetic.
The finishes were carefully coordinated with the wider interior scheme, ensuring the staircases integrated seamlessly with flooring, wall finishes and glazing throughout the properties.
Installation & Outcome
The staircases were supplied to site ready for installation within the new-build programme. Their precision manufacture ensured accurate fitting and a high-quality final result.
The completed Model 500 staircases now serve as statement features within each home, enhancing both visual appeal and perceived space. Their modern, open design supports the architectural intent of the development while offering practical, everyday usability.
