Model 500 Staircase

You are here: Home1 / Modern Staircases2 / Model 500 Staircase

Model 500 Staircase

The Model 500 is a bespoke modern open staircase designed as a striking centrepiece within contemporary homes.

It combines solid timber treads with slim 10mm steel plate stringers positioned either side of the staircase, creating a clean, architectural appearance while maximising light and openness throughout the space.

Open risers allow light to pass freely between floors, and many clients choose frameless glass balustrades to further enhance the bright, minimal feel of the design.

Design & Structure

The steel stringers run along either side of the staircase and are available in a range of profiles, including flat top and bottom, zig-zag top, flat bottom, or zig-zag top and bottom, allowing the staircase to be tailored to suit the architecture of the property.

Despite being only 10mm thick, the steel stringers provide exceptional structural strength, maximising clear tread width without compromising on safety or quality.

Materials & Finishes

A full range of hardwood treads is available, from birch through to walnut, with oak and beech proving particularly popular. All timber treads can be finished in either oil or a matte lacquer.

Steel stringers are powder coated in any RAL colour and support laminated toughened glass panels, making the staircase not only visually striking but also durable and safe for everyday use.

Bespoke Design Process

Each Model 500 staircase is fully bespoke, with every project carefully designed prior to manufacture. Height, going, width, and configuration are all tailored to the individual property, ensuring each staircase is completely unique.

Below you’ll find a detailed breakdown and full gallery showcasing the Model 500 in completed homes, along with an enquiry form should you require further information or a tailored quotation.

Configurations

The stair is made to measure so can be produced to a number of different configurations.  It is the floor to floor height and the available stairwell size that will determine the correct shape of staircase.

Tread Options

The model 500 staircase has 50mm timber treads.  These span the entire width of the flight so need to be constructed in hardwood for strength.  These treads are formed from horizontal laminated blocks of solid timber to prevent movement and increase rigidity.   They are supplied with a natural lacquer varnish finish or oiled in the factory.  They can also be supplied ‘RAW’ for finishing by others.

Whilst the frameless glass option remains the favourite there are several other forms of balustrade on the model 500 staircase.  Matching balustrade can be supplied around the stairwell opening for safety.

Riser Infill Options

To conform to regulations in the UK, the gap between the steps must be no larger than 100mm.  This is to prevent small children falling through the back of the step.   Below are the riser infill options – the majority of which maintain a gap to enhance the passage of light.

Project of the month - March 2026 Walnut Spiral St Project of the month - March 2026
Walnut Spiral Stair in Chiswick RefurbishmentOur client lived in a duplex apartment in Chiswick, with a basement below that was a separate dwelling rented out to someone else. When the basement came up for sale, he bought it with plans to connect it to his home and create a three-story property, likely returning it to its original layout. He originally contacted us about the stairwell size needed for a spiral staircase, as space was tight and a spiral seemed the best option. While the opening width was ideal, the depth was limited, so we designed an 1800mm diameter spiral with a shortened triangular platform, shifting the center column away from the rear wall. The platform also served as a walkway between two rooms, and using a glass floor helped bring much-needed natural light into the windowless basement. For the finish, he chose special boxed walnut treads over steel with brushed steel balustrades for a modern yet understated look. The result was a stylish connection to the basement that brightened and enhanced the living space.

February 2026 - Oak Spiral Stair in Canterbury new February 2026 - Oak Spiral Stair in Canterbury new buildThis month’s project of the month is a Model 71 spiral staircase supplied to a new build property in Canterbury, Kent. The customer had already built one property on the site and was embarking on the second build project. He had a nice open hallway planned but wanted to create a unique feature as you entered the property. It was very important that the staircase was modern in design but also reflected the more traditional style of the building. After reviewing the options available, he settled on our Model 71 with satin lacquered oak treads, brushed stainless steel components, and curved glass balustrade infill panels clamped between posts. The stainless steel and glass gave a modern feel to the staircase, whilst the oak treads and handrail reflected the traditional style of the property. As this was the main staircase in the property, and the client had plenty of space, he opted for a larger than required diameter. Not only did this create a dramatic focal point when entering the hallway, it also made the stair very safe and practical for everyday use.For a seamless installation, we supplied matching landing balustrade to go across the front of the galleried landing.

Project of the Month – January 2026Commercial Of Project of the Month – January 2026Commercial Office Spiral Staircase, Tewkesbury, GloucestershireWhile many of the staircases we design and manufacture are for private homes, our range is equally suited to commercial spaces where design, durability and visual impact matter. This month’s Project of the Month showcases a striking spiral staircase installation within a commercial office fit-out in Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire. The client was the end occupier of the building and was undertaking a full transformation of the space, tailoring every detail to suit their business and brand.Office RefurbishmentAs part of the refurbishment, a new intermediate floor was installed across the full footprint of the unit, effectively doubling the available workspace. Although a practical internal staircase already provided access, the client wanted something more impactful for the reception area — a staircase that would make a statement from the moment visitors entered the building.By being involved early in the project, we were able to work closely with the fit-out team, advising on the exact opening size and layout requirements for the new floor. This ensured the spiral staircase integrated seamlessly into the finished space, both structurally and visually.Positioned prominently within the reception area, the spiral staircase design is enhanced by a sweeping outer steel apron that rises elegantly around the perimeter of the staircase, guiding the eye up to the upper level.FeaturesTo balance style with practicality, the staircase features solid oak treads combined with a non-slip rubber insert, providing durability and safety for daily commercial use. An oak handrail and curved glass balustrade panels complete the look, allowing light to flow freely through the space while maintaining a clean, contemporary aesthetic. The glass balustrade is continued around the upper floor opening, creating a cohesive and refined finish throughout. The result is a staircase that is not only functional, but a defining feature of the new office— reinforcing the client’s brand and identity.
