Project of the Month – February 2024
Spiral Staircase Montrose
We live in a stunningly beautiful world and we often don’t take a moment to appreciate our surroundings. A common request we receive from customers is for an external spiral staircase to access a viewing platform or balcony. There is a certain tranquility about viewing the world from an elevated position in your property. Most are constructing a balcony to allow them to sit outside on a balmy summer evening to enjoy the view and take a break from their hectic lives.
This is exactly what out client on this project was looking to achieve. They were located in a small hamlet on the east coast of Scotland near Montrose. By installing a platform to the front of their home they were able to take in the magnificent views of the valley below. To access the deck they needed a spiral staircase.
Our customer wanted a decent width of spiral as the platform was to be used frequently. Scottish regulations required a 900mm clear tread width for this sort of spiral so a 2000mm diameter was chosen. We supplied a 1500 x 1000mm platform to connect with the existing balcony which was topped with chequer plate steel. The balustrade was formed with 10mm vertical steel spindles and a 42mm diameter steel handrail.
To add emphasis to the swopping natural of the spiral, our client opted for the 1.5mm external stringer plate. This is a thin piece of steel bolted to the side of the staircase in line with the pitch of the flight, hiding the treads from the side. Riser bars were included to ensure the gap between the treads was less than 100mm.
I have no doubt our client will have many relaxing evenings ahead on their new balcony and enjoy using the spiral staircase to access it.
