Project of the Month – February 2023
Spiral Staircase Colchester
Our client owned a large estate in a stunning countryside location just outside Colchester in Essex.
She was renovating several of the outbuildings and associated barns and was keen to access a small mezzanine with a spiral staircase. Our client was quite particular with the specification and we were able to satisfy her requirements with our custom made range.
Although space was a consideration it was decided to make the spiral slightly larger that it needed to be. So the spiral was designed to conform with the geometry requirements of a category B spiral staircase (primary domestic spiral) . A 1825mm model was chosen to ensure it had the 800mm clear tread width with 12 treads leading up to a square top platform. A 40 x 10mm flat bar handrail topped 20mm diameter spindles and the treads were supplied as a flat steel plate. Our client’s builder then added a timber topping with the oak flooring being used in the barn.
There was a further 4m of landing balustrade included along the mezzanine level set at 1m high and all the steelwork was powder coated jet black.
It isn’t often we can see these spiral staircases in such a clear and spacious setting. Being able to take 20 steps back to take a photo enables us to really encompass the entire scene and effectively show the impact a spiral staircase can have in a room.
