Oak Spiral Stair Bury St Edmunds
Our client was renovating a period property in the historic market town of Bury St Edmunds and a spiral staircase was required in a turret to replace the existing rickety iron spiral. The previous spiral was completely enclosed and our client wished to open up the space and all allow the light to shine through from the turret windows. Although our client wished to modernise internally, they were keen to maintain a link to the period features. Glass treads were suggested for example to maximise the floor of light but they were deemed to radical and modern. Finally we decided upon oak treads with our model 71 spiral system. Oak being a traditional, warm and timeless material.
The spiral had 50mm solid oak treads matt lacquered in the factory with brushed stainless steel spindles. These spindles ascended up to meet a 50mm diameter solid oak handrail which was supplied in one piece. The centre column barrels were formed with barrels of stainless steel which reflected the light beautifully. Thin stainless steel riser bars were added to reduce the gap between the treads to meet building regulations.
The entry and exit points were important with this job (as they always are) as the each the entry below and exit above had to be in a fixed position. There was a opening into the turret below and a door above directly in line with each other. Luckily the storey height wasn’t huge large so there were not too many steps to fit a 270 degree rotation.
The Model 71 range is a custom made spiral and can be made in any diameter from 1100 to 2200mm. The treads are always produced in hardwood with oak, beech, maple and ash the most popular. The spindles and column are generally stainless steel but they can be powder coated if wished.
