Project of the Month – February 2025
Modern Staircase Acton
Our client had recently acquired a dormant court house in a busy street in Acton, west London. He and his partner purchased the property with a vision to refurbish the building into a modern dwelling, keeping many of the traditional features. Upstairs was a tremendous vaulted ceiling, high enough to build a couple of mezzanines either side of the vast space that accommodated the main living area and kitchen. In the middle of this space was a stairwell leading down to the bedrooms. This was the space that was to occupy an attractive, modern and functional steel, glass and timber staircase.
The staircase ran up the left hand wall to the floor above leaving a small gap for the client to install an LED strip. To match the flooring, 50mm solid maple treads were supplied for the stair with a small down-stand to the front to ensure the gap between the treads was less than 100mm. The frameless glass panels to the right hand side of the stair were topped with a stainless steel handrail. The same frameless glass balustrade was supplied around the opening at first floor level, secured in place against a steel apron which was powder coated to match the steel stringers of the stair. No handrail was supplied to the horizontal balustrade as our client wanted a minimalistic appearance upstairs.
The ambitious refurbishment rightly attracted media attention after completion with many complements bestowed upon the staircase!
The pictures are a mixture of those send by the client and images taken by various magazines it featured in.
